Charles Sumner
In his "Crime Against Kansas" speech, Sumner identified two Democratic senators as the principal culprits in this crime Stephen Douglas of Illinois and Andrew Butler of South Carolina. Because of this speech he made representative Preston Brooks angry. Brooks beat Sumner with his cane. After hitting him several times Brooks walked away with out being detained.
